January 2026 Retrospective
After what has transpired this month there really isn't much I want to write about publicly so I'm gonna try and keep it brief. But I do want to make sure that everyone has listened to the speech that Mark Carney gave at the 2026 World Economic Forum:
Satisfactory
I cannot justify the amount of time I have put into Satisfactory this month but dear god it is like crack to me. Something about it tickles my programmer brain and I must build, tear down, and rebuild every factory line until it is perfect. It truly does feel the same as debugging something complex. You see the problem in front of you, you know where you need to get, but the path forward is slightly obscured. The number of times I've spent several hours on something only to learn that is the absolute wrong way to do it cannot be counted with all of my fingers and toes.
With over a quarter of a million reviews on Steam this game is obviously insanely popular but I can only think of a single person I could recommend it to. Every other one of my friends would think that I've finally gone off the deep end if they saw how many hours I've put into Satisfactory.
Started season two of The Pitt
The first season of The Pitt is one of the greatest single seasons of television. It is right up there with Band of Brothers, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Chernobyl, and the first season of Westworld.
We are four episodes into season two and I'm happy to report that there are no signs of a sophomore slump. If you think you can stomach the gore there is no better show on television right now.
Watched The Rip
If you're looking for a solid cop thriller that just cuts straight to the chase I highly recommend The Rip. It's not going to win any awards for its writing but it moves at a brisk pace and doesn't get bogged down by anything that isn't critical to the plot. Combined with great action scenes and solid acting, I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.
Read Golden Son
I finished Golden Son, the second book in the Red Rising trilogy, and unfortunately it's just a tropey as the first. I really struggled to finish it and was rewarded with one of the worst cliffhangers. I immediately read the plot summary for the third book, Morning Star, as I just wanted to let this series escape from my brain.
Like I said last month, I completely understand how I could have been enamoured with stuff like this as a teenager, but at this point in my life there are so many better books that need to be read.
